Kottke.org is ten years old

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Jason Kottke’s blog at kottke.org is ten years old today. If you don’t read it, it is my opinion that you probably should.

Given the way blogs come and go, or rather how just about anything on the web seems to have a limited lifespan, kudos to Kottke for making something with some longevity - here’s to another 10 years (and beyond…)

Art, demystified

Friday, March 14th, 2008

If you’re lacking inspiration for your own art, why not get a tree to draw for you?

Joking aside, it’s a pretty cool concept but would really lose a lot of appeal were it not for pictures of the “artist” accompanying the final piece.

Terminal 5, JFK

It’s no secret that I like looking at buildings. It’s also no secret that I like flying. Eero Saarinen’s main building of Terminal 5 at New York’s JFK airport is just about the perfect amalgamation of the two. I absolutely love it.

In how many metros around the world have you been?

Innovative idea

Friday, March 14th, 2008

I really like David Horvitz’s “if…” idea, where he provides lots of different things you can buy from him, though not products in the traditional sense.

I like the more elaborate ones the best, like:

If you give me $2,443 I will rent a car in Iceland and find you three things. I will find you a lava rock and send it to you. I will find the Aurora Borealis for you and send you a photograph of it. I will find you the best hot spring, and I will sit in it for you. I will send you a photograph of me sitting in it. I will mail these from there. (I will still also try to drive around the entire island)

But there are plenty others on there that are much more affordable if you just want to be involved in a pretty cool idea.
